you probably need some background!
Who is Jonathan Singleton.
Jonathan Singleton—often known by his nickname SIG—is an English architect-turned-furniture designer and metal sculptor who has been working around Barcelona since the early 1990s. He blends architectural rigor with expressive artistry, employing industrial materials like steel and stainless, combined with Noble woods or crude leather, to create evocative, functional pieces that blur the line between design and sculpture.
From Architecture to Artisan Work
Origins & Move to Barcelona
Trained as an architect, Singleton grew disillusioned with the traditional architecture track and relocated to Barcelona in 1993. He infused his architectural background with a passion for metalsmithing—originally cultivated through restoring vintage cars and crafting steel furniture in England.
Early Workshops in Poblenou
In the mid-1990s, he established his first metalworking studio in Poblenou—a then-industrial, now creative hub of Barcelona. It was here that he began developing signature furniture pieces, including the renowned “Easy One” chair, and became part of an artistic collective of makers and designers.
Later Development, The Garage in Agramunt and the move to Tarragona
Eventually, Singleton moved his operations to Agramunt (in the Lleida region), where he founded The Garage—a concept space blending showroom, workshop, showroom, restoration atelier, and even café. Here, he continues crafting bespoke pieces in steel and wood, and curates an eclectic mix of restored vehicles, vintage items, and collectible furniture. Later still he moved back to the coast of Tarragona where he continues to broaden his curriculum, bending some of his own rules of design to see where it will take him, while still producing some of his classic pieces.
Signature Style & Impact
Material and Form
Singleton’s designs—like his stainless steel club chairs and his “Unflat” coffee table—combine sleek industrial materials with organic or architectural forms, resulting in pieces that are both bold and tactile.
Artistic Philosophy
As an artist and craftsman, he seamlessly blends structural strength with aesthetic nuance. His pieces often feature clean geometry softened with curves and textures, reflecting inspirations from modernist architecture, automotive design, and functional sculpture
Jonathan Singleton (SIG) is a uniquely hybrid figure: part architect, part metalsmith, part artist. His work has left its imprint on Barcelona’s evolving design scene, with his creations finding homes in private collections, galleries, and beyond.
